Do they actually keep those records, though? I mean, I believe that they are tracking which articles are read via cookies, but those are stored on the client-side. On the server-side, you might keep track of aggregate page views from regions based on the geolocated IP , but do they really keep logs on a per-ip-address, per-page basis? It seems like an awful lot of information to store for very little analytical value.
These sites get so much traffic that if they said “we don’t keep that information on our servers, so we cannot produce it”, I would believe them.
