The 2023 general election is fast approaching and politicians are coming out to signify their interest and intentions to run for a certain position. The stalwart of the ruling All Progressive Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu is one of the prominent men believed to be keen on contesting for the position of Presidency at the next general election.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu is an influential figure in Lagos State and this earned him the title; “Asiwaju of Lagos” and the “Godfather of Lagos”. Some still refer to him as the “Jagaban of Lagos”, even though the ideal title is “Jagaban of Borgu emirate”. Some Nigerians have come out to show solidarity with Bola Tinubu over his presidential ambition. Many believe that if power rotation would be considered, Bola Ahmed Tinubu would be in pole position to emerge as Muhammadu Buhari’s successor.

However, Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ambition to become the flag bearer of the All Progressive Congress might have taken a big blow after President Muhammadu Buhari’s remarked who becomes the candidate of the ruling party in the next general election. At a point in time, there was a rumor that President Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu weren’t on good terms, a rumor which was debunked by the Presidency.
According to the guardian, President Muhammadu Buhari was quoted saying that someone can’t sit in Lagos and determine who becomes the party’s flag bearer. He stated that nobody has a monopoly over telling the party what to do. His statement made Nigerians believe that he was referring to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Jagaban of Lagos due to his interest in becoming Nigeria’s president.
However, the ruling party came out to debunk the claim that President Muhammadu Buhari’s “Sit in Lagos” statement was directed to Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I’m tempted to ask if the President’s statement about the party determining who becomes its flag bearer signifies that Bola Ahmed Tinubu doesn’t have an upper hand about the next general election?
