NANS president, Sunday Asefon, stated this on Tuesday, during a chat with journalists in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State.

Asefon decried the worsening insecurity in the and how it has affected students who have become victims of kidnapping and banditry at will.

He also said NANS had relocated its national headquarters to Niger State, pending the release of over 200 students of Islamiyya School in the Rafi Council area.

Asefon said, “I hereby declare June 11 as the national students’ day of prayers. Prayers shall be offered for the repose of our students who have died in the hands of kidnappers. Prayers shall be held for the return of our students who are still with their kidnappers.

“I hereby declare June 12 as the National Day of Peaceful Protest to call on the government to act decisively towards addressing insecurity in our schools, campuses and also announce a proactive measure or strategy towards ensuring safer schools.”

On why decided to schedule a protest on Democracy Day (June 12), Asefon asked, “What are we celebrating as a democracy when many of our students are in kidnappers’ den?”

In another development the President has also called for the immediate closure of schools in the northwest region following the spate of killings and kidnappings of students and civilians.

The NANS’ leader, said barely 24 hours after students of Greenfield University in Kaduna were released by their abductors, about 200 students of Islamiyya school were kidnapped in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, in a shocking and bizzare fashion.

He said the seemingly incessant and incurable kidnapping of students in the North West and North central calls for immediate and radical move to halt the gradual slide of the country into anarchy.

“Putting it in the right perspective, the Government and security apparatuses have failed us, we can no longer trust them.
