Most of us know the kidney to be a very important organ in the body that is responsible for the removal of waste products and excess fluid but we don’t know some of our habits that can destroy it.

The kidney performs other functions such as balancing of the body’s fluid, controls the production of red blood cells, produce the hormone that helps in the regulation of blood pressure, remove waste products from the body, etc. the kidney also contain millions of functioning units called nephrons which also has tiny blood vessels called glomerulus attached to a tubule. This is where most of the kidney’s functions are carried out.

The kidney can be affected and when not treated on time can lead to death. Some chronic kidney disease includes glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney disease, kidney stones, urinary tract infections, congenital diseases, etc.

When your kidney is affected, your body will begin to give you some warning signs. Some of them include

1.    Difficulty in sleeping at night.

2.    You will experience dry and itchy skin.

3.    Frequent urge to urinate especially at night.

4.    Presence of blood in the urine.

5.     Foamy urine as also another sign that shows the presence of protein.

6.    Puffiness around the eyes.

7.    Abnormal fatigue. Etc.

Don’t panic if you begin to experience any of these signs because it can be treated. Careful control of diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure can help prevent kidney disease or keep it from getting worse. 1.    Excessive consumption of salt and sugar

Salt is very good and add taste to our food but when you take excess of it, it can damage your kidney. Too much intake of salt can raise your blood pressure level due to the presence of sodium in it. This high blood pressure can in turn affect your heart,kidney, liver and other vital organs of your body. Both sugar and salt are strong solvents and are not good for the kidney when you take them too much. Excess sugar intake can lead to diabetes which is one of the risk factors for kidney disease.

2.    Excessive intake of alcohol

Alcohol due to the presence of ethanol has the ability to affect the liver and the kidney when you take it too much. Excessive intake of alcohol can increase your chances of developing chronic kidney disease and high blood pressure. It can even lead to liver cirrhosis. Research has shown that those who smoke and drink alcohol excessively have a very high chance of developing any kidney disease.

3.    Excessive intake of painkillers

Please, before you take any pain killers, try to check the doctor’s prescription and follow it. Pain killers are very effective and can help alleviate joint pain, muscular pain, aches, etc but can be very dangerous to the kidney, liver and health at large.
