It has been a very long time away from school for students in our universities due to the outbreak of the corona virus pandemic across the world of which, our beloved country, Nigeria was not spared.
Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu.
However, it should be worthy to note that before the lockdown of schools across the country over the growing rate of the virus, most of our universities were on ASUU strike and students were away from school.
Now, this makes it more than six months that we students have been away from school and it is not looking funny. Most of our mates in the polytechnics and some other state universities such as Delta State University, are already back to the classrooms taking lectures.
I was having a chat with a coursemate of mine some days back and we were both complaining of how we would have been in another year of study already. Now our dream of graduating by 2023 is on the brink of collapse because, almost an academic section have been wasted.
In case you don’t know, some Institutions across the country like University of Benin, federal university of petroleum resources, Effurun Delta state were still in their first semester before this whole lock down occurred.
And now that it is becoming safe for schools to reopen, the federal government of Nigeria and the Academic staff Union of universities are still at loggerhead with each other over the adoption of a payment scheme that will be suitable for both parties.
However, with the way things are going, it is becoming obvious that these people are not willing to reach a conclusion and the more the problems drags on, we the students will be the ones to suffer.
So, in my opinion I think what we should do now as students is to organise ourselves across the country and go on a peaceful protest demanding that ASUU Strike should be brought to an end with immediate effect.
A protest is the only way for us to push both parties so that we would be able to return back to schools and continue from where we stopped.
The chant is “END ASUU STRIKE” but while doing this, we all should ensure that we don’t break the law and orders. It should be peaceful all through.
Thanks for reading through and don’t forget to share your contributions to this topic. I am tired of the Strike and I want to go back to school, what about you?
