Nyesom Wike has reacted to the defection of Dave Umahi, with the Rivers state governor saying his Ebonyi counterpart left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to pursue his presidential ambition.
Daily Trust had reported that Umahi’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, November 17, was officially recognised by the ruling party household.
Umahi parted ways with the opposition block in what has left a huge vacuum in the PDP considering the fact that he is the chairman of the Southeast Governors Forum (SGF)and a leading light for the opposition.
In a swift reaction, Governor Wike said Umahi left the party, not because injustice was meted to the southeast but because of his personal presidential bid.
The Rivers state governor also disclosed that his defection did not come to the PDP members as a surprise because the Ebonyi governor was already building a political romance with the ruling party over time.
Governor Wike told Umahi to retrace the statement that he left the PDP because of the injustice against the southeast region by the opposition party, saying he will not allow his “friend” to”blackmail and tell lies to people.” “My friend, Umahi wants to be president.
There is no problem with that. You’ve a right to be president.Nobody can stop you.”
According to him, the Ebonyi governor is an educated man who is serving his second term as governor and is therefore qualified to say he wants to be Nigeria’s president.
Meanwhile, the Association of Ebonyi State Indigenes in the Diaspora (AESID) has reacted to the defection of Governor David Umahi to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
AESID made its stance known on the trending issue via a statement sent to Daily Trust on Wednesday, November 18 by its president, Ambassador Paschal Oluchukwu.
The group said the defection of Governor Umahi didn’t come as a surprise, stressing that the governor is known for political inconsistency since his foray into politics.
The group stated that the political life of the governor has become a domesticated case of a study in downright betrayal beginning from his days in the Dr Ogbonnaya Onu campaign Directorate in 1999.
It accused Governor Umahi of manipulated his way to power through lies, deceits, blackmails and popular opium of power shift.
Part of the statement read:
”One thing is that these attributes and qualities particularly his sheepish behaviour of damaging any dish he is served foods with are only very consistent to the personality and character of Umahi who has always been a crass opportunist.
”His erstwhile boss and indeed, all those who worked for and with him are now telling pathetic tales of how he treats anyone who takes risks for him like a piece of a dirty handkerchief.”
The group further alleged that the governor is joining the ruling party to ensure his activities in government are not scrutinised by anti-graft agencies after he leaves government.
”It would therefore be a huge shame if the APC government which claims to have made the fight against corruption a cardinal policy does not shove Umahi off their broom and hand him over for thorough prosecution.
