President Muhammadu Buhari, last Thursday appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff to replace Ibrahim Attahiru who died in a plane crash.
Yahaya before his appointment was the immediate- past Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai.
The appointment of Yahaya was questioned by some quarters with critics arguing that Buhari should have considered a Southerner for the position.

The government in its reaction noted that appointment in the security sector is not done based on sentiments.
Following Yahaya’ s appointment, twenty- four Major Generals are expected to retire from the Nigerian Army soon.
Thirteen of the Generals were from the North and 11 from the South, were above Yahaya before his elevation.
In addition the appointment may be infer from the recent clamouring and agitation of the igbo youth for the state of Biafra and appointing Igbo as the Chief of Army Staff may pave the way for another coup as happened to retired general Yakubu when Colonel Joseph Nanven Garba announced the coup in a broadcast on Radio Nigeria (which became FRCN in 1978). At the time of the coup, Gowon was attending the 12th Organisation of African Unity (OAU) Summit in Kampala, Uganda.
Moreover, such also occured to President Muhammadu Buhari when he was the Head of State, in the face of the austerity measures, worsening economic conditions, and continued widespread corruption (this is questionable as corruption was said to have been at its lowest ebb in the Buhari/Idiagbon regime), Buhari was overthrown in a coup led by General Ibrahim Babangida and other members of the ruling Supreme Military Council (SMC) on August 27, 1985.
However, President Muhamnadu Buhari as alleged the Army of coup which they denied the allegation.
All these need a proper attention before appointing anyone and as and experience man on the field, he will not permit such to happened to him because it will be a big disgrace to him and the north will not betray him.
